#NEF "One is not a warrior in the field: an effective team as a guarantee of success"

2022.11.07

What distinguishes a team from a group of people? Understanding where you are heading together. That is, a common goal. At the training on effective team management, Oksana Kaminska, Director of Development at a restaurant chain with over 10 years of experience in management, spoke about the steps that will help a manager achieve common goals with a team as efficiently as possible.

Assess the real team structure. An honest audit provides insight into the real situation. For example, there is always a person in the team who is listened to. This can be either the manager or a person in a completely different position. If you understand that the manager does not have a close relationship with the team and people turn to another person in the team in crisis situations, then your communication as a manager should be with both the formal and informal leader.

Create a process matrix. This is necessary in order to analyse the real situation with the roles in the team, otherwise you are only guessing about the actual roles. Sometimes, the list of responsibilities does not coincide with the position for which a person is actually hired. Such a matrix will help in the effective selection of team members. By understanding the processes that need to be closed, you will select the most suitable people for them.

Choose the best tools for managing your team. Determine how often you hold regular meetings, how you exchange documents, what management methodology you use (for example, scrum, canban, waterfall), what tools you use to set tasks and receive feedback. Plan your work. Do you need to plan in time of war?

Plan depending on the type of your business. For long-term planning, it is important to understand where you want to see the company in 2 years, and plan tactical steps depending on the situation. If you can plan for a few days, plan for a few days. If you see that the planning horizon is a week, plan for a week. But it is important to plan.

Set goals and communicate them to the team. If your goals are not recorded anywhere, consider them non-existent. If the goals are not discussed with the team, consider that only you have this goal. It is important to communicate goals as clearly as possible. To set goals, Oksana recommends using the OKR (Objectives and Key Results) method: define a global goal, describe the results by which you will understand that you are achieving it, and track the achievement.

Establish communication within the team. The biggest problem with communication is the illusion that it has taken place (George Bernard Shaw). Don't assume that if people are working in the same room and on the same task, they all understand what's going on in the same way. This is not the case. For better communication, it is important to have one channel for the whole team, if your team has several departments and areas, communicate with people in separate channels. Communication is a two-way process, and the main cause of conflicts is misunderstandings in the communication process.

We thank the participants for their activity, questions and dynamics, and the speaker for an interesting and useful training. Stay tuned for announcements, the next event is coming soon.

The event was held within the framework of the New Economy of Ivano-Frankivsk (NEF) project, which is a project that envisages the process of transforming the city into a competitive innovative economic centre. The project is being implemented by a consortium of partners: The Executive Committee of Ivano-Frankivsk City Council, the innovation centre Promprylad.Renovation, the urban laboratory METALAB, the economic development agency PPV Knowledge Networks, and the Teple Misto platform.
