PACE Awards for the City of Ivano-Frankivsk

In 1955, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe decided to award prizes to cities that actively promote European values. In fact, this time became the starting point of the great history of the Europe Prize.

The Europe Prize is a set of four high awards of the Council of Europe - the European Diploma, the Flag of Honour, the Plaque of Honour and the Europe Prize - which are awarded on a competitive basis to the municipalities of the CoE member states for active partnership, active cooperation with foreign cities and sustainable development with European partners.

FIRST STEP – The European Diploma

Every year about 30 cities become honorary winners of the first award. The official award ceremony takes place at the Palace of Europe (Strasbourg) during the June session of the Parliamentary Assembly. The mayors of the winning cities receive a Diploma stating the name of the municipality and the year. The city of Ivano-Frankivsk received a European Diploma in 2005.

SECOND STEP - the Flag of Honour

Every year the winners in this nomination are 20-25 cities in Europe. A member of the Parliamentary Assembly solemnly presents the award to the heads of the municipality in the presence of the local community. The Flag of Honour is a dark blue flag embroidered with gold threads and framed with a gold stripe. It is noteworthy that this award is a necessary achievement for applicants for the Plaque of Honor and the Europe Prize. The Flag of Honour of the Council of Europe was awarded to the city of Ivano-Frankivsk in 2008.

THIRD STEP - the Plaque of Honor

Every year 8-10 cities win the third honorary award. The award ceremony is a solemn one to which the local community is invited. The award is presented by a member of the Parliamentary Assembly. The badge has the form of a board, in the upper part is depicted the mythological abduction of Europe, in the central -12 stars of Europe with the year of award, in the lower part there is a map of Greater Europe and the name of the awarded city. The city of Ivano-Frankivsk received the Plaque of Honor in 2012.

FOURTH STEP – the Honorary Prize

The solemn ceremony of awarding the Plaque of Honor of the Council of Europe in Ivano-Frankivsk took place on September 28, 2018. Europe Prize – is a special award given only to those cities that have shown outstanding efforts to promote European integration ideas and mutual understanding between the peoples of Europe. It is an opportunity to be proud of your city and strive to do as much as possible for its development. After all, its assignment is an unconditional sign that our city is organically perceived by the European community in terms of its appearance, progressive development strategy and confession of generally accepted human values. We highly value such trust and honor. It is an incentive for residents, and especially for young people, to strive for integration, borrowing best practices and promoting the city outside the country.

On April 24, the PACE press service announced the victory of Ukrainian city of Ivano-Frankivsk in the competition for the Council of Europe Award - the Europe Prize in 2018.

The winner of this award was announced at the beginning of the PACE session by the President of the Assembly, Michele Nicoletti: “It is a great honor for me to announce the winner- the city of Ivano-Frankivsk. We congratulate Ivano-Frankivsk, and thank this city for its cooperation with Europe and congratulate our Ukrainian friends".

The President of the PACE Committee for Determining the Winners of the Europe Prize, Romanian MP Ionut-Marian Stroe, commented on the voting.

"I would like to congratulate Ukrainians and Ivano-Frankivsk on receiving the Prize. The decision was made by secret ballot by members of the committee. I think that Ivano-Frankivsk received this award for several reasons, including a rich history. I think it also contributed to the fact that it is a developed industrial center in Ukraine. But first of all, this is the level of international and European cooperation".

According to him, at the last stage - a secret ballot, Ivano-Frankivsk received three votes out of seven and it was the largest number of votes among all other cities.

In fact, this award is an award of all Ivano-Frankivsk residents.
