The city was first mentioned in 1209, the name comes from the word Nirsheg, the name of the lowland area in which the city is located, which in turn comes from the word Nyír (birch). In the middle of the XV century. the settlement numbered 400 people.
In the XVIII century the city's population grew significantly, mainly due to the influx of Slovak colonists. In 1786, Nyíregyháza had a population of 7.5 thousand. In the XIX century, a large number of new buildings were erected in Nyíregyháza, and the city was industrialized. In 1858 the railway came to the city.
At the end of the First World War, Nyíregyháza was occupied by Romanian troops. During the post-war settlement, the city was ceded to Hungary. During World War II, part of the city’s buildings was destroyed, killing much of the city's Jewish diaspora.

The main sectors of the economy are industry and construction. The role of agricultural enterprises is insignificant. A wide range of benefits and subsidies attracts more and more foreign investors to this region, including Nyíregyháza. There is also an industrial park with an area of 107 hectares, which cost almost 1 billion forints ($ 3.3 million).
The city is interesting for tourists. The Sóstógyógyfürdő leisure area is very popular, with a Park Bath complex, a zoo with a sea aquarium and an open-air village museum. The Park Bath also has a football pitch, tennis courts and a mini-golf course.
