Baia Mare ("big mine") is a city in Romania, Transylvania, the administrative center of Maramures County. The area of the city is 233.3 square kilometers (one of the largest cities in Romania). Population 123,738 inhabitants (2011 census).
The first mention of the city dates back to 1142 when the Hungarian King Geza II brought German settlers here. The Hungarian population has always predominated in the ethnic composition of the city, the second-largest were Romanians, followed by Germans. In the 20s and 40s of the twentieth century, Baia Mare was part of the Kingdom of Romania, and from 1944 it became part of Hungary. According to the Treaty of Paris, Baia Mare was ceded to Romania.
Baia Mare is a center for the extraction of non-ferrous metals. There is a plant of non-ferrous metallurgy (lead, copper, gold), the production of sulfuric acid is carried out by mining, food, woodworking industries.
