In 1801, the District of Alexandria and the City of Alexandria became part of the District of Columbia and became known as the "Administrative District of Alexandria". In 1846, the people of Alexandria called a referendum and voted to reintegrate the territories into the state of Virginia. In 1870, the district of Alexandria and the city of the same name received the status of separate administrative units. On March 16, 1920, Alexandria County was renamed Arlington County. The reason was a possible confusion with the names of territorial units. The name of the county originates from the estate of Parke Custis, where George Washington lived long before the modern Arlington House was built. The latter is located in the Arlington Memorial Cemetery. The estate was later renamed Earl of Arlington.
