#JCulture We held another series of informative lectures for young people related to the history of the Jewish community in our city

2023.03.22

As a part of the project "Research and preservation of Jewish cultural heritage in the border area", we held another series of informative lectures for young people related to the history of the Jewish community of our city. This time, students of the Ivano-Frankivsk Professional Polytechnic Lyceum and the Higher Vocational School No. 21 in Ivano-Frankivsk learned about history. The young people learn about the first Jewish settlements in the area, where our city is now located, and about their lifestyle and crafts at the time of the founding of Stanislaviv by the Potocki family.

The students learned some interesting terms related to Jews, such as "okopysko", "kahal" and the principles of Jewish surname formation, and where the city's first and largest Synagogue was located at the time. The lectures mentioned famous Jews who participated in local government, had significant holdings and influenced the life of the city, such as the owner of a leather crafting factory Jacob Margoshes and the Gartenberg brothers, who built well-known Passage Gartenberg. In addition, the students were told about the location and life in the city's Jewish ghetto during World War II and the "black dates" of this period, when thousands of Jews were killed by the Nazis. In the second half of the 20th century, the size of the Jewish community in Ivano-Frankivsk steadily decreased, and today it numbers about 200 people. However, their legacy is of great importance in the context of preserving the city's cultural and historical heritage.

The project "Research and preservation of Jewish cultural heritage in the border area" (JCulture) is implemented within the framework of the Cross-border Cooperation Programme of the EIS Hungary-Slovakia-Romania-Ukraine 2014-2020, financed by the European Union.
