#JCulture The project aims to raise awareness of the history and cultural heritage of the Jewish community in Ivano-Frankivsk
The project «Research and preservation of Jewish cultural heritage in the border area» aims to raise awareness of the history and cultural heritage of the Jewish community in Ivano-Frankivsk. To this end, the project held a series of lectures for students of Ivano-Frankivsk Higher Vocational School No. 13. During the lectures, Khrystyna Tymoshiv told the students about the history of the city's Jewish community from the founding of Stanislaviv to the present day.
Students learned about the privileged position of the Jews granted by Andrzej Potocki, and about their crafts and customs during the period when they were the most numerous community in the city. Of course, the black page in the history of Jewish people, the genocide during World War II, was not ignored, as according to various sources, which today are still being clarified, between 40 and 100 thousand Jews were killed in Stanislaviv. The students were also told about the Jewish tourist route that was created as a part of the project and the historical buildings that have survived to this day, and where famous members of the Jewish community lived.
During the lectures was mentioned that despite the small number of Jews in Ivano-Frankivsk today, Jews are one of the leading communities that shaped the history of our city, so it is worth taking an interest in and studying the past.
The project "Research and preservation of Jewish cultural heritage in the border area" (JCulture) is implemented within the framework of the Cross-border Cooperation Programme of the EIS Hungary-Slovakia-Romania-Ukraine 2014-2020, financed by the European Union.
