2023.05.05

The Cabinet of Ministers approved the Energy Strategy of Ukraine until 2050, which reflects the goals of the European Green Deal and the achievement of carbon neutrality in the energy sector by 2050. The document provides for the development of modern and safe nuclear and "green" generation, as well as the modernization and automation of transmission and distribution systems. The document is based on the principles of an integrated approach and will contribute to sustainable economic development.

The Strategy takes into account - the consequences of a full-scale war, strengthening the role of energy security and enhancing the sustainability of the power system; - the results of the accession of the integrated power system of Ukraine (IPS) to the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) and the deepening of the IPS integration into the European one; - availability of the most advanced technologies (in particular, production and use of hydrogen for energy purposes, small modular nuclear reactors, energy storage facilities, etc.), technical changes in the energy sector, global trends and innovative solutions, environmental safety requirements that meet EU standards and Ukraine's commitments; - Ukraine's international commitments on energy efficiency and use of renewable energy sources, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, etc.; - decentralization of electricity generation throughout the country to improve the sustainability and reliability of energy supply.

The draft Strategy was prepared by the Ministry of Energy together with experts from energy companies, including NNEGC Energoatom, NPC Ukrenergo, NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine, GTSOU, Ukrhydroenergo and others, with the support of the UK Government and the involvement of KPMG. The developers consulted with experts from the International, German, and Danish Energy Agencies, as well as the U.S. Department of Energy and the Berlin School of Economics. The draft was also presented to the European Commission.

The RO-UA Partnership for Climate Change Mitigation project is funded by the European Union through the European Neighborhood Instrument and co-financed by the countries participating in the ENI CBC Romania-Ukraine 2014-2020 Program.
