#Part4CM In different countries of the world, the issue of energy independence is increasingly being raised

2021.09.23

The issue of energy independence is increasingly being raised around the world due to rising energy costs and negative environmental impact. The RO-UA Partnership for Climate Change Mitigation project aims to disseminate information about alternative energy sources that can be a significant step towards achieving energy independence.

Ukraine has significant potential for biomethane production as an alternative to natural gas. Ukraine can meet 25% of its own gas needs with biomethane. It is expected that Ukrainian biomethane may be the cheapest, and therefore the most accessible for export, so Ukraine is very competitive with its prices. The total capacity of bioenergy in Ukraine is only 111 MW (for comparison, solar energy has 7.3 GW).

The country's biogas potential using agricultural waste alone is 7.8 billion cubic meters of gas per year, and if we add food waste to it, the potential is already 9.5 billion cubic meters. We can meet 25% of our own gas needs with biomethane. In Europe, 2.5 billion cubic meters of biomethane are already used annually, and the demand for it will reach 38 billion cubic meters by 2030. The EU countries will have to buy this gas, and we have excellent opportunities for biomethane, as Ukraine is the largest agricultural country in Europe, and we have a well-developed gas trunk network. Ukrainian bioenergy plays a significant role in the development of renewable energy sources.

The RO-UA Partnership for Climate Change Mitigation project is funded by the European Union through the European Neighborhood Instrument and co-financed by the countries participating in the ENI CBC Romania-Ukraine 2014-2020 Program.
