#Part4CM Due to the global environmental situation, it is important to promote the transition to renewable energy sources

2021.04.06

Due to the global environmental situation, it is important to promote the transition to renewable energy sources. This is one of the activities of the RO-UA Partnership for Climate Change Mitigation project.

Analysts at the International Energy Agency (IEA) predict that two-thirds of the growth in renewable energy sources (RES) will come from wind and solar power. Overall, the share of renewables in electricity generation will increase to almost 30% in 2021 (from 27% in 2019), the highest since the Industrial Revolution. This is stated in the annual Global Energy Review 2021.

According to IEA analysts, there will be a record annual increase in wind generation by about 275 TWh, or 17%, compared to 2020. In addition to wind and solar energy, hydropower and bioenergy generation is expected to continue to grow. The agency notes that the demand for renewable energy sources increased by 3% in 2020 and should continue to grow in all sectors of the economy in 2021 - in energy, heat supply, industry, and transportation. In particular, electricity production from renewable energy sources in 2021 should increase by more than 8% and reach 8300 TWh, which is the highest annual figure since 1970. The review also emphasized that China alone accounts for half of the global increase in green electricity. China is followed by the United States, the European Union, and India. It is expected that in 2021, solar and wind energy will generate more than 900 TWh of electricity in China, about 580 TWh in the European Union, and 550 TWh in the United States. Together, these countries account for about a third of global solar and wind generation.

The project «RO-UA Partnership for Climate Change Mitigation» (RO-UA PART4CM) project is financed by the European Union through the European Neighborhood Instrument and co-financed by countries participating in the ENI CBC Romania-Ukraine 2014-2020 Program «Romania-Ukraine 2014-2020».
