Over the past two decades, the capacity of renewable energy sources (RES) has increased rapidly, and 2020 saw the highest increase since 1999. Thus, in 2020, the annual increase in renewable energy capacity increased by 45% to almost 280 GW. Moreover, the record increase in capacity may become the new normal. In particular, solar power capacity increased by 50% compared to the pre-pandemic period. Meanwhile, wind energy has doubled its capacity.

According to forecasts, the development of solar photovoltaic energy will continue to break records, and annual revenues will reach 162 GW by 2022 - almost 50% higher than in 2019. It is noted that the growth of European capacity is accelerating due to further political support, a growing corporate PPA market, and lower costs for photovoltaic energy. Currently, China is among the leaders in the development of renewable energy, accounting for about 40% of the world's capacity growth in this area for several years.

The project «RO-UA Partnership for Climate Change Mitigation» (RO-UA PART4CM) project is financed by the European Union through the European Neighborhood Instrument and co-financed by countries participating in the ENI CBC Romania-Ukraine 2014-2020 Program «Romania-Ukraine 2014-2020».
