#CULTROUTE Ivan Franko and Ivano-Frankivsk: a trip through history

On October 27, another exciting trip was held as part of the “Thematic Route of Castles 2 (CULT.ROUTE)”, which is implemented within the Interreg VI A NEXT Hungary–Slovakia–Romania–Ukraine programme. 

This time, participants embarked on a trip through the pages of our city's past, full of interesting discoveries and historical mysteries. We visited the famous Potocki family, uncovered the secrets of the oldest functioning bathhouse in Ukraine, which also has its own political past, and learned how canaries influenced the history of the cathedral.

One of the highlights of the trip was meeting Ivan Yakovych Franko, an outstanding writer, philosopher, and symbol of the Ukrainian spirit. We remembered how Franko was arrested in Stanislaviv in 1880, and later returned here as a symbol of freedom of thought and the power of words.

In 1962, on the 100th anniversary of his birth, Stanislaviv was renamed Ivano-Frankivsk. Since then, Franko has become an integral part of the city's identity: his monument adorns the city center, and the university, theater, and streets proudly bear his name.

This trip served as a reminder that Ivan Franko left not only his mark on our city, but also a piece of the unbroken spirit of Ukrainian identity.
