#CULTROUTE Opening of the Town Hall Dungeon and Premiere of the Neo-Opera-Horror “HAMLET”

2026.09.11

As part of European Heritage Days 2026, within the framework of the “Thematic Castle Route 2” (CULT.ROUTE) project under the Interreg VI-A NEXT Hungary–Slovakia–Romania–Ukraine program, the renovated Town Hall dungeon was officially opened in Ivano-Frankivsk, and the first theatrical event — a performance of the neo-horror opera “HAMLET,” based on William Shakespeare’s play of the same name — took place there immediately afterward.

The historic dungeon of City Hall are a part of the city’s history that have kept their secrets for decades. Today, this space is taking on a new cultural significance and becoming a place where historical heritage meets contemporary art.

That is precisely why the premiere of “HAMLET” was such a special event. Shakespeare’s tragedy resonated within the ancient walls, creating a completely different kind of theatrical experience — one that was atmospheric, intimate, and directly connected to the space itself.

The opening of the dungeon space and the first performance marked another step toward ensuring that the city’s historic sites remain vibrant and open to new cultural ideas.
