#DAPHNE Green-oriented healthcare waste management – a step towards sustainable healthcare

2026.05.28

Within the DAPHNE – Decarbonising Healthcare in EU Regions project, implemented under the Interreg Europe programme, we continue to share inspiring good practices from our partners. One of them is the Green-oriented Memorandum of Understanding on Healthcare Waste Management, an initiative focused on making healthcare waste management more sustainable, efficient, and environmentally responsible.

Healthcare systems generate significant amounts of waste every day, creating environmental and climate-related challenges. This good practice demonstrates how cooperation between healthcare institutions, public authorities, and environmental stakeholders can support the transition towards greener healthcare systems.

The initiative promotes a more circular approach to healthcare waste management by encouraging waste reduction, better separation and recycling processes, smarter resource use, and sustainable operational practices. By improving waste management policies and introducing greener solutions, healthcare institutions can significantly reduce their environmental footprint while maintaining high-quality medical services.

An important aspect of this practice is the emphasis on collaboration and long-term commitment. Through the Memorandum of Understanding, participating organisations work together to exchange knowledge, align their sustainability goals, and implement innovative approaches that contribute to climate action and resource efficiency.
