#Daphne Low-carbon healthcare infrastructure in Flanders: a systemic approach to sustainable healthcare development

Within the DAPHNE – Decarbonising Healthcare in EU Regions project, implemented under the Interreg Europe programme, we continue to share good practices that demonstrate effective approaches to reducing the carbon footprint of healthcare facilities.
One such example comes from Flanders (Belgium) ????????, where a comprehensive approach to developing low-carbon healthcare infrastructure has been introduced. This is not only about individual technical solutions, but about a systemic transformation of how healthcare facilities are planned, built, and modernised.
In Flanders, strong emphasis is placed on energy efficiency standards, the use of innovative construction solutions, and modern resource management technologies. Particular attention is given to reducing energy consumption, improving the efficient use of materials, and creating a comfortable environment for both patients and healthcare professionals.
An important element of this approach is strategic planning at the regional level, which enables coordinated investments, supports long-term policy development, and ensures sustainable results in the healthcare sector.
This practice shows that the transition to low-carbon healthcare requires a combination of innovation, effective governance, and clear policy direction. Such an approach paves the way for building a more sustainable and environmentally responsible healthcare system across Europe.
