#DAPHNE A new standard for sustainable healthcare: the experience of St. Maria Emergency Hospital in Iasi (Romania)

2025.09.08

As part of the project DAPHNE - Decarbonization of Healthcare in the EU Regions, implemented under the Interreg Europe program, we continue to share the good practices of our partners. One of them is the large-scale renovation of St. Maria Emergency Hospital in Iasi (Romania), which has become an example of how modern technologies can transform medical facilities into more sustainable and comfortable ones.

The project included complete thermal modernization of the building, facade insulation, new windows, and shading; modern HVAC with solar panels; LED lighting and motion sensors; elevator modernization; an integrated building management system and infrastructure improvements. Thanks to these measures, the hospital not only reduced its energy consumption by more than 300 kWh/m² per year, but also reduced greenhouse gas emissions by almost 1,600 tons of CO₂ annually. This has significantly improved energy efficiency, reduced the environmental impact, and created high-quality conditions for both patients and staff.

The renovated medical facility treats around 50,000 patients every year and has become a real example of how a comprehensive approach to modernization can combine environmental goals with caring for people's health. The project was financed with over EUR 24 million, of which more than EUR 18 million came from European and national sources within the regional operational program.

The experience of St. Maria Emergency Hospital demonstrates that sustainable development in healthcare is possible when innovation, effective management, and a forward-looking approach are combined. This example inspires other EU regions, as it shows that the transition to environmental standards can improve the quality of medical services and patient safety at the same time.
