#DAPHNE Green Hospital in Wolica – an example of decarbonisation in healthcare in action
As part of the DAPHNE project - Decarbonisation of Healthcare in EU Regions, implemented under the Interreg Europe program, we continue to share our partners' good practices. One such story is the experience of Poland - Provincial Specialised Healthcare Complex for Lung Diseases, Tuberculosis in Wolica, which has become a model for the transition to a sustainable and environmentally responsible development model.
The hospital, which specialises in complex and lengthy treatment processes for patients with lung diseases, faces high energy consumption. That is why the transition to a ‘green hospital’ was not only an economic decision, but also a strategic step towards caring for the environment and the health of future generations.
In 2022-2023, the hospital implemented a number of innovative measures: a new building was constructed using modular technology and recuperation systems, solar panels with a capacity of approximately 200 kW were installed on both the roof and the ground, a rainwater storage system was installed, and a station for composting biodegradable waste was created. In addition, 6 air source heat pumps were installed for heating and hot water supply, and a modern energy consumption monitoring and management system was implemented to optimise costs.
The hospital's uniqueness also lies in its close connection with nature. The facility is located in a pine forest, which allows the healing properties of the environment to be used for patient rehabilitation. There is a ‘health trail’, a garden with a gazebo, an outdoor relaxation area, flower beds, as well as places for feeding and nesting birds and even periodic apiaries.
The green transformation of the hospital in Wolica has another important aspect – it proves that the healthcare system can be part of global climate solutions. The combination of medical and environmental goals opens up new opportunities for regional development and a more sustainable Europe.
