#DAPHNE Green Healthcare: Renewable Energy & Efficiency Upgrade of Bicaz Town Hospital
As part of exploring the best European practices in the decarbonisation of healthcare, within the "Decarbonisation of Healthcare in EU Regions (DAPHNE)" project, implemented under the Interreg Europe programme, we continue to highlight successful initiatives that help healthcare facilities become more energy-efficient, environmentally friendly, and resilient to today's challenges.
One of these inspiring examples is the energy efficiency and renewable energy upgrade of Bicaz Town Hospital in Romania. The project demonstrates how the comprehensive renovation of a healthcare facility combined with the integration of renewable energy sources can significantly improve healthcare services while reducing environmental impact .
The renovation included thermal insulation of the building, upgrades to the façade, roof, and windows, modernization of heating and lighting systems, and the installation of renewable energy technologies. These measures have significantly reduced energy consumption, lowered greenhouse gas emissions, and decreased the hospital's operating costs.
Beyond the environmental benefits, the project has also created a more comfortable and safer environment for both patients and healthcare professionals. Improved energy efficiency ensures a stable indoor climate, enhances the reliability of hospital operations, and allows financial savings to be reinvested in healthcare services.
