#DAPHNE The green transition in healthcare

2026.01.23

Within the framework of the project DAPHNE – “Decarbonising Healthcare in EU Regions”, implemented under the Interreg Europe programme, we are presenting European good practices that demonstrate how modern technologies can reduce the carbon footprint of healthcare facilities while simultaneously improving the quality of medical services.

One such practice is the experience of the Ludwik Rydygier Regional Hospital in Toruń (Poland) ????????, where a comprehensive set of energy-efficient and environmentally responsible solutions has been introduced. Through the application of innovative technologies, the hospital has significantly reduced energy consumption and CO₂ emissions, optimised technical systems and created a safer and more comfortable environment for both patients and medical staff.

This practice clearly shows that decarbonisation in the healthcare sector can be achieved without compromising the quality of care. On the contrary, the modernisation of medical infrastructure leads to higher energy efficiency, lower operational costs and greater long-term resilience of hospitals, which is particularly important for regions and local communities.

The experience of the hospital in Toruń is a valuable example for European cities and regions seeking to align climate goals with the development of healthcare systems. It fully reflects the objectives of the DAPHNE project, which promotes the transition towards greener, more sustainable and climate-resilient healthcare systems.
