#EdAH Ukrainian Photography in a Moment of Change

2026.02.18

On February 14-15, a two-day workshop for adults took place within the framework of the project “Educational-Artistic Horizons beyond the Borders ”(EdAH), implemented within the Interreg NEXT Romania-Ukraine 2021-2027 program with the support of the European Union.

These two days became a true immersion into contemporary Ukrainian photography - a living process that evolves alongside society and the experience of war. We discussed the transformation of photographic narratives: from conceptual art projects to documentary practices and mixed media. We explored works by Ukrainian photographers before and after the full-scale invasion, analyzing how the visual language and meanings have shifted.

A separate part of the workshop was dedicated to photobooks - we held a live viewing of publications and talked about form, structure, and ways of “reading” photographic stories.

This workshop became a space for collective analysis, discussion, and a deeper understanding of the contemporary Ukrainian photographic context.

The second dimension was practical: participants were introduced to medium format film, observed how the camera works, and tried themselves in portrait photography, interacting with one another and exploring the process of framing and composition.

An important part was an open portfolio review - an opportunity to present personal work, receive honest feedback, and see one’s photographs in a broader context.

This publication has been produced with the financial support of the European Union.
