#EdAH Video as a space of memory: practices and experiments
On November 22–23, a workshop with Yarema Malashchuk and Roman Khimei took place within the framework of the project “Educational-Artistic Horizons beyond the Borders” (EdAH), implemented within the Interreg NEXT Romania-Ukraine 2021-2027 program with the support of the European Union.
On the first day, participants immersed themselves in the topics of the nonlinear history of moving images, referentiality, and visual thinking. Yarema and Roman spoke about filmique, the process of making visual decisions, and how the format of presentation - a museum or a cinema - influenced the perception of a video work.
The second day was entirely practical: we reviewed participants’ works and ideas, discussed possible directions for development, and analyzed visual decisions. The practical tasks focused on exploring temporality in video - representations of time, rhythm, repetition, and editing as tools for working with memory and narrative.
Yarema Malashchuk and Roman Khimei are Ukrainian filmmakers and visual artists who have been working together since 2016. In their works, they explored the intersection of documentary and fiction, addressing themes of post-imperial structures, collective memory, and the experience of a generation living between past trauma and an uncertain future.
