#HealthCities ATMP Centre at Skåne University Hospital
As part of exploring the best European practices in the development of healthcare and life sciences within the “Health and Life Sciences Industries' Growth through Cities Alliances (Health Cities)” project, implemented under the Interreg Europe programme, we continue to showcase successful initiatives that foster medical innovation and strengthen regional healthcare ecosystems.
One of these inspiring examples is the ATMP Centre at Skåne University Hospital in Sweden. The Centre specializes in the development and implementation of Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs), including cell, gene, and tissue therapies. These cutting-edge treatments are opening up new possibilities for patients with complex and rare diseases, where conventional therapies are often insufficient.
The ATMP Centre brings together clinicians, researchers, universities, biotechnology companies, and public authorities, creating a collaborative platform that accelerates the translation of scientific discoveries into clinical practice. This integrated approach significantly shortens the journey from research to innovative patient care.
A key strength of the Centre is its comprehensive support throughout the entire innovation process. It provides expertise in manufacturing according to international quality standards, supports clinical trials, offers regulatory guidance, and facilitates the commercialization of innovative medical technologies.
Thanks to this model, the Skåne region has become one of Europe's leading hubs for personalised medicine and life sciences innovation. The Centre demonstrates the importance of building an ecosystem where healthcare providers, academia, industry, and public institutions work together to deliver breakthrough therapies and improve patient outcomes.
