#IFSenergy Why does water leave marks on pipes, and how does this affect the water supply?

2026.10.30

As part of the information campaign for the “IFSynergy – Cross-Border Cooperation in SMART Water Supply Management in the Cities of Ivano-Frankivsk and Siedlce,” project, implemented with the support of the Interreg NEXT Poland–Ukraine 2021–2027 program, we’re highlighting the often-overlooked processes that can affect the operation of water supply systems.

Have you ever noticed a white coating on your taps, showerheads, or inside a kettle? This is one of the most common signs of minerals in the water.

The water we use every day contains natural minerals, including calcium and magnesium. Their concentration depends on the water source and the characteristics of the soil through which the water flows. It is these minerals that determine what is known as water hardness.

When heated or exposed to changing chemical conditions, some of the dissolved mineral compounds can form solid deposits - scale. Such processes can occur not only in household appliances but also within components of the water supply infrastructure.

Over time, the buildup of deposits can affect the operation of pumping equipment, and increase energy consumption. This is particularly important for large water supply systems, where even minor changes can impact the efficiency of the infrastructure. That is why monitoring the mineral composition of water and performing regular maintenance on the networks are of vital importance. Laboratory tests help determine water characteristics, while modern monitoring technologies enable the timely detection of changes in system performance.

As part of the IFSynergy project, modern approaches to water supply management are being implemented to enhance infrastructure efficiency, improve water quality control, and promote the rational use of resources.
