#IFSenergy War and Water: How Ukrainian Cities Are Learning to Be Sustainable

2026.01.05

Russia's full-scale invasion has changed everything. What seemed ordinary just yesterday — water from the tap, stable water pressure, a predictable supply schedule — has now become part of a major struggle for survival. Water supply systems in Ukraine have transformed from a public utility into a critical infrastructure element that must withstand attacks, power outages, shelling, and logistical disruptions.

Ivano-Frankivsk, like many other Ukrainian cities, has already experienced extreme situations — when it was necessary to provide water even without electricity or communication. That is why the IFSynergy project includes a comprehensive set of solutions to enhance resilience: backup power sources, emergency supply routes, and additional stocks of water treatment chemicals.

This is not just a technical solution. It is a strategy for times of war. It is the understanding that even under the most difficult conditions, people must have access to clean water. Because water is a fundamental necessity. And that is precisely why we are building a system capable of functioning despite any challenges.

The project "IFSynergy – cross-border cooperation in SMART management of water supply systems in Siedlce and Ivano-Frankivsk" is being implemented within the framework of the Interreg Next Poland – Ukraine Programme 2021-2027.
