#IFSynergy How Climate Change Is Affecting Urban Water Supply Systems

As part of the information campaign for the project “IFSynergy – Cross-Border Cooperation in SMART Water Supply Management in the Cities of Ivano-Frankivsk and Siedlce,” implemented with the support of the Interreg NEXT Poland–Ukraine 2021–2027, we’re sharing how modern technologies help cities adapt to new climate challenges and build a sustainable water supply system.

When we hear the words “climate change,” we most often imagine hot summers, prolonged droughts, heavy downpours, or floods. But these phenomena have a much deeper impact than might seem at first glance. They change how urban infrastructure operates, particularly water supply and wastewater systems.

During prolonged periods of hot weather, water demand increases significantly. This puts greater strain on pumping stations, pipelines, and wastewater treatment plants. At the same time, heavy rainfall can overload sewer systems, increase the risk of flooding, and complicate the work of public utilities. Added to this are challenges related to aging utility networks, which were often not designed to handle modern climatic conditions.

That is why cities across Europe are now reviewing their approaches to water management. They are shifting from reacting to emergencies to preventing them. To this end, they are implementing digital monitoring systems, sensors, geographic information technologies, big data analysis, and network simulation. These solutions make it possible to forecast demand, identify potential risks more quickly, and plan infrastructure upgrades in a timely manner.

The IFSynergy project is based on this approach. Its goal is to make the water supply system more modern, efficient, and resilient to future challenges. This means not only implementing new technologies but also fostering a new management culture where decisions are data-driven and problems are resolved before they become critical.
