#IFSynergy Why does water need digital transformation?

As part of the “IFSynergy – Cross-Border Cooperation in SMART Water Supply Management in the Cities of Ivano-Frankivsk and Siedlce”, implemented under the Interreg NEXT Poland - Ukraine programme, we are exploring and implementing digital technologies for city water management.
We live in a digital age where almost everything is monitored and controlled: transport, energy, communications, even street lighting. But when it comes to water, many people still think of it as something traditional, stable, something that just “is”. In reality, water supply needs digitalisation just as much as any other system. Because it is critical infrastructure on which our daily quality of life depends.
Water supply systems are complex and often non-transparent. We do not always know where losses occur, how pressure changes in different parts of the city, or where the system is operating at its limits. And sometimes we only find out about the problem when someone has no water. This is where digital technologies become invaluable.
SMART systems turn a chaotic network into a precisely controlled mechanism. They operate in real time, detect even the smallest failures, and allow us not only to respond to emergencies but to prevent them. It’s not just about saving resources; it’s about stability, safety, and giving residents confidence that water in the city is under control. From early problem detection to strategic water consumption management at the district or even individual building level.
This is the vision brought to life by the IFSynergy project. We are not just implementing “smart” equipment - we are transforming the very approach to water management. Digitalization is not about trends; it’s about responsibility. It is the shift from reaction to anticipation, from chaos to systematization, from chance to control.
