#IFSynergy Wrocław’s experience in modern water resource management

Just ten years ago, the situation in Wrocław was familiar to many Ukrainian cities: outdated water networks, constant leaks, and water losses of over 30 per cent. Water was disappearing before it even reached residents’ taps. But today, Wrocław is a example of a digital breakthrough in water supply management. And the most interesting thing is that it’s not just about new pipes.
The municipal utility MPWiK Wrocław has created a truly innovative system. They have introduced integrated digital monitoring, which has transformed the vast water supply network into a single ‘living’ organism that alerts them to problems itself. Meters, pressure sensors, flow meters — all these devices constantly transmit data to a single control centre. If the pressure drops at any point, the system immediately sends a signal: a leak may be present. And the technical team is dispatched straight away, before the problem has a chance to escalate.
Thanks to this, Wrocław has managed to reduce water losses to less than 10 per cent — and this in a city with a large area and complex infrastructure. In addition, the operation of over 100 pumping stations has been optimised, significantly reducing energy consumption and expenditure from the city budget.
As part of the IFSynergy project, we aim to adapt a similar approach in Ivano-Frankivsk, where the city is shifting from a ‘repair after a breakdown’ model to a ‘prevention before a problem arises’ model. Where the focus is not simply on repairs, but on anticipation. Where the city does not wait for complaints, but identifies issues and responds proactively.
The project "IFSynergy – cross-border cooperation in SMART management of water supply systems in Siedlce and Ivano-Frankivsk" is being implemented within the framework of the Interreg Next Poland – Ukraine Programme 2021-2027.
