#IFSynergy What happens to the water supply system during a power blackout?

As part of the information campaign for the project “IFSynergy – Cross-Border Cooperation in SMART Water Supply Management in the Cities of Ivano-Frankivsk and Siedlce,” implemented with the support of the Interreg NEXT Poland–Ukraine 2021–2027, we’re explaining how energy resilience is linked to the reliability of water supply systems.

For most citizens, a power blackout primarily means no lights. However, for the water supply system, it poses a much more complex challenge, as electricity is essential for the operation of pumping equipment, automated control systems, and other infrastructure components.

Pumping stations ensure the necessary flow of water through the network and help maintain the required pressure. When the power supply is interrupted, equipment operation may be limited or halted, affecting the stability of the water supply. High-rise buildings can be particularly vulnerable to such changes, as sufficient pressure is needed to deliver water to the upper floors.

That is why the reliability of the water supply depends not only on the condition of the pipes but also on the energy resilience of the entire system. Water utilities use backup solutions, emergency power sources, and organize equipment operations in such a way as to minimize the impact of power outages on residents.

As part of the IFSynergy project, special attention is given to modern water supply system management, infrastructure modernization, and finding solutions that help make water supply more sustainable, energy-efficient, and reliable.
