#INSPIRE A Rainy Day – New Discoveries for Schoolchildren

As part of the “INSPIRE project – Inclusive and Developmental Spaces for Progressive, Innovative and Adaptive Education” project, implemented under the Interreg NEXT Romania-Ukraine 2021-2027 program, we support approaches that turn any situation into a learning opportunity.
Instead of canceling class because of rain, the eco-lesson is simply moved outside; schoolchildren go out into the schoolyard with buckets, measuring cups, and notebooks. They place the containers at various points in the schoolyard—on the grass, on the asphalt, under trees, near bushes—and begin a real-life study of nature in action. After a while, the students measure the volume of collected water, compare their results, and record the data. Then they discuss why the amount of water differs, how surfaces affect rainwater runoff, and the significance of rainfall intensity.
This rain experiment is not just a fun activity. It is a way to: teach scientific thinking through observation and analysis; foster environmental awareness by explaining natural processes in simple terms; and develop teamwork skills as children collaborate on a shared investigation.
