#INSPIRE Learning Through the Study of Nature in Slovenia

2026.07.23

As part of the “INSPIRE project – Inclusive and Developmental Spaces for Progressive, Innovative and Adaptive Education", implemented under the Interreg NEXT Romania–Ukraine 2021–2027 Programme, we are exploring European practices that make nature-based learning engaging and effective.

Around schools in Slovenia, mini-eco-trails are being set up, equipped with informational signs about trees, shrubs, insects, and soil. During walks, children learn to observe nature, identify plant and animal species, understand the interconnections within an ecosystem, and grasp the principles of sustainable development.

Eco-trails often include interactive activities: students can count leaves, measure tree heights, take soil samples, or observe insects and birds. This allows them to combine physical activity with learning, and the hands-on experience gained during these walks reinforces knowledge much more effectively than theoretical lessons in the classroom. In addition, such trails foster curiosity, observation skills, and teamwork. Children learn to interact, discuss their observations, and work together to find answers to environmental questions. School eco-trails in Slovenia demonstrate that learning can be lively, interactive, and inspiring, and that the natural environment becomes a true open-air classroom where every step is a lesson.
