#INSPIRE The School Forest as a Space for Learning and Development

As part of the “INSPIRE project – Inclusive and Developmental Spaces for Progressive, Innovative and Adaptive Education", implemented under the Interreg NEXT Romania–Ukraine 2021–2027 Programme, we are studying successful models of environmental education from various countries in order to implement the best approaches in our learning spaces.

One such innovative practice is the “school forest” in Finland. In many Finnish schools, children have constant access to natural spaces that are used as part of the learning environment. These can be small forest areas, parks, or natural meadows near the school. These spaces are used not only for science classes but also for math, language arts, art, and physical education. Students explore their surroundings, complete hands-on tasks, observe changes in nature throughout the seasons, play, and learn at the same time.

The Finnish model is based on a simple yet powerful idea: nature is the best environment for harmonious development. It promotes concentration, reduces stress, stimulates creativity, and fosters a deep connection between people and the environment. These aren’t just lessons — they’re a way of life in harmony with nature, which instills the values of sustainable development and a responsible attitude toward the world from childhood onward.
