#InterCities History comes alive thanks to the InterCities project!
Archaeological excavations on the territory of the Potocki Palace in Ivano-Frankivsk were held as part of the project “Intercultural Consciousness of Multinational Cities: Tolerance of New Generations” (InterCities), which is implemented as part of the Interreg VI-A Next Hungary-Slovakia-Romania-Ukraine program with the support of the European Union.
Thanks to this project, it was possible to organize archaeological research in the center of Ivano-Frankivsk, which has already produced significant results. During excavations near the Potocki Palace, archaeologists found artifacts from the XIV century, i.e., the period preceding the official founding of the city in the XVII century.
Among the finds are fragments of ceramics, pottery pipes, glassware, and household items. These artifacts confirm the active trade and cultural ties between the ancient city and different regions of Europe. Archaeologists also discovered the remains of ancient streets and cultural layers, which can be traced to a depth of up to two meters. This gives reason to believe that this territory has been inhabited for a long time and confirms the historical continuity of the city's development from the Middle Ages to the present day.
“Each artifact is not just a fragment of the past, but a piece of a great history that allows us to recreate the appearance and life of the city more than 600 years ago,” say the archaeologists working on the research. After conservation and cataloging, all artifacts will be added to the museum collections of Ivano-Frankivsk so that residents and visitors to the city can see with their own eyes the history that was hidden underground.
