#InterCities From Sketches to Restoration. Academy of Heritage in Design
From July 19 to 27, a summer school — the Academy of Heritage in Design—took place in the Romanian city of Sighetu Marmatiei. It was organized as part of the project “Intercultural Consciousness of Multinational Cities: Tolerance of New Generations", implemented within the Interreg VI A NEXT Hungary–Slovakia–Romania–Ukraine program.
Throughout nine days, students and young architects from Ukraine and Romania worked on real cultural heritage objects, combining theory with practice. Participants were divided into three teams, each of which studied an authentic farmstead at the Village Museum of Maramures: they took measurements, created drawings, analyzed the condition of the buildings, and developed proposals for their conservation and future use.
In addition to the hands-on work, the program included study visits to iconic landmarks in Maramures: the wooden church in Budesti, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Memorial to the Victims of Communism, the workshop of woodcarver Ioan Boroda, and the wooden church in Poşta, which had been damaged by fire. It was there that the participants took measurements of the monument and proposed their own ideas for its preservation. The program also included a visit to the famous Merry Cemetery in Sepința.
Practical workshops on traditional clay plastering and woodworking played a special role, helping participants gain a better understanding of the characteristics of historical construction techniques. The training was complemented by lectures from architects Horatiu Răceşan, Flaminiu Talos, and Diana Talos, and the final stage consisted of presentations of team projects and a professional discussion of their results.
The summer school served not only as a platform for acquiring practical skills but also as a space for international exchange of experiences, new connections, and collaboration among young professionals working to preserve cultural heritage.
