#ParksMatter Biodiversity of City Parks - A Living System, Not a Decorative Element

As part of the information and communication campaign of the project "City Parks Matter - a new approach to urban greenery management in Ivano-Frankivsk and Rzeszów (ParksMatter)" project, implemented under the Interreg NEXT Poland – Ukraine 2021–2027 Programme, we continue introducing topics that help better understand the role of city parks in modern cities. 

Biodiversity is the variety of plants, animals, mushrooms, and microorganisms that together form a single ecosystem. It is thanks to this diversity that a park remains healthy, attractive, and resilient to environmental changes.

Biodiversity is important not only for nature but also for people. It helps to:

• purifies the air and improves air quality;
• helps lower temperatures in the city on hot days;
• retains rainwater and contributes to the natural water balance;
• supports pollinating insects and other species essential to the functioning of ecosystems;
• helps parks better adapt to climate change.

Life in urban parks can be found everywhere — in old trees, among shrubs, in the grass, under tree bark, and in fallen leaves. Even these seemingly unnoticed elements provide important habitats for many species.

Protecting biodiversity begins with simple actions. Do not damage trees and plants, do not leave litter behind, respect wildlife and birds. Every one of us can contribute to preserving nature.

Urban parks are much more than places for walking. They are living ecosystems that purify the air, help maintain climate balance, and create a comfortable environment for the community. Let us protect them together!
