#ParksMatter Why do city parks matter?

2025.03.26

As part of the awareness-raising campaign envisaged by the project “City Parks Matter - a new approach to urban greenery management in Ivano-Frankivsk and Rzeszów (ParksMatter)”, we inform about the best practices of urban greenery, the value of green spaces and the need to preserve biodiversity.

Why do city parks matter?

Parks are not just green spaces in the city, but real "green lungs" that play a key role in improving air quality and microclimate. Trees and plants in urban parks absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, which has a positive impact on the health of residents.

For example, in Kyiv, Taras Shevchenko Park has a significant effect on air pollution in the city center, as trees absorb about 20% of CO2 emissions.

In European cities such as Copenhagen, parks help reduce temperatures by 2-3°C in the hot months, contributing to the residents' comfort.

In Barcelona, parks cover more than 30% of the city's territory, which improves the overall level of air humidity and reduces the heat island effect.

In cities such as Munich, London, and Amsterdam, studies have shown that urban parks contribute to a 10-15% reduction in the incidence of disease among the population due to better air quality and opportunities for physical activity.
By implementing the best greenery maintenance practices provided by our project, Ivano-Frankivsk city parks will make the city even more comfortable to live in.
