#ParksMatter Children and the park: learning through play and creativity

2025.10.09

As part of the project City Parks Matter - a new approach to urban green space management in Ivano-Frankivsk and Rzeszów (ParksMatter), implemented as part of the Interreg Next Poland-Ukraine 2021-2027 program, the last two of ten educational classes were held for pupils of Primary School No. 9 and the Vyacheslav Chornovil Lyceum.

The classes, entitled “Life in the Park: From Seedling to Bird,” were designed for children aged 8 to 12 to show them that a park is not just a place to walk, but a living organism in which people, plants, and animals coexist in harmony. For two hours, the children embarked on an exciting “journey” through the green world of city parks, discovering how trees purify the air, why birds and squirrels choose parks as their habitat, and what an important role each plant plays in the natural balance of the city.

During the classes, the pupils not only listened and discussed, but also actively created. They created their own “Park of My Dreams” projects, where imagination was combined with a love of nature. And during art therapy, the children made panels from dried herbs and flowers - a symbol of the small but very important connection between humans and nature.

At the end, each participant created their own postcard for the park with a wish or promise to protect the environment: not to litter, not to break branches, to feed birds, and to protect green spaces. These cards were combined into a common “tree of good wishes” - as a reminder that love for nature begins with simple everyday actions.

Such initiatives help to shape children's conscious attitude towards the environment, teaching them to see parks not only as a place of recreation, but as a living space that needs our care.
