#ParksMatter Lviv - Green Spaces as Places for Learning, Recreation, and Nature Conservation

On August 20, a study visit as part of the project “Parks Matter — A New Approach to Urban Greenery Management in Ivano-Frankivsk and Rzeszów (ParksMatter),” which is being implemented under the Interreg NEXT Poland–Ukraine 2021–2027 Program, continued in Lviv.

The focus was on the role of green spaces in shaping a sustainable urban environment, preserving biodiversity, and creating comfortable spaces for people.

Participants continued their work with a presentation of the Strategic Plan for the Management of Urban Green Spaces in Ivano-Frankivsk and Rzeszów, presented by coordinator Olga Zakapko. Myroslava Mylenka, director of the “Observatory” International Educational and Scientific Center and professor in the Department of Biology and Ecology at V. Stefanyk Carpation National University, spoke about nature conservation areas as a resource for balanced urban development.

A separate session focused on the topic “More Than Just Greening: Landscape as a Space for Learning, Recovery, and Spirituality.” After all, modern green spaces must serve far more functions than simply beautifying the city. They can help people recover, learn, socialize, and spend time in nature.

Participants also learned about the experience of the Botanical Garden of the National Forestry University of Ukraine as an element of the city’s green infrastructure — with an emphasis on biodiversity conservation, environmental education, and sustainable development. After the theoretical session, participants visited Lviv’s green infrastructure sites — Ivan Franko Park and Zamartynivsky Park, including the inclusive zone near the Unbroken Center.

It is precisely this combination of expert knowledge and practical examples that provides a clearer understanding of how modern greening can contribute to the city’s comfort, regeneration, inclusivity, and environmental sustainability.
