#ParksMatter Nature-based solutions — when nature becomes part of urban solutions

As part of the information and communication campaign for the project “City Parks Matter - a new approach to urban greenery management in Ivano-Frankivsk and Rzeszów (ParksMatter)”, implemented within the Interreg NEXT Poland – Ukraine 2021–2027 Programme, we are talking about modern approaches to the development of urban parks, nature-based solutions and successful European experiences that could also be useful for Ukrainian cities.
Cities are increasingly facing the consequences of climate change: prolonged heatwaves, heavy rainfall, flooding and a decline in biodiversity. At the same time, effective solutions do not always require significant financial investment. Often, nature itself becomes a city’s greatest ally.
This is the very foundation of nature-based solutions (NBS) — approaches that utilise natural processes to improve quality of life, protect the environment and enhance communities’ resilience to climate challenges.
- Trees provide shade, cool urban spaces and improve air quality.
- Green spaces and rain gardens help retain rainwater, reducing the risk of flooding.
- Flower meadows support biodiversity and require fewer resources to maintain.
- Pollinating insects help to maintain healthy ecosystems.
Such initiatives have already become an integral part of the development of many European cities, as they simultaneously improve the environment, make public spaces more comfortable for people and help cities adapt to climate change.
