#ParksMatter Ternopil - Green Solutions for a City Ready for the Future

On August 21, as part of the project “Parks Matter — A New Approach to Urban Greenery Management in Ivano-Frankivsk and Rzeszów (ParksMatter),” which is being implemented under the Interreg NEXT Poland–Ukraine 2021–2027 Program, participants of a study tour visited Ternopil — a city that is actively developing green and recreational spaces.

The day began with a presentation of the Strategic Plan for the Management of Urban Green Spaces in Ivano-Frankivsk and Rzeszów, delivered by the curator Olga Zakapko.

Myroslava Mylenka, director of the “Observatory” International Educational and Scientific Center and professor in the Department of Biology and Ecology at V. Stefanyk Carpation National University, spoke about nature conservation areas and their role in the city’s balanced development.

The main focus of the day was on the city’s green transformations and the creation of sustainable urban ecosystems. During the presentations, participants discussed the transition from traditional landscaping to a comprehensive approach, in which green spaces take into account climate challenges, the city’s ecological needs, and the comfort of its residents. They also discussed the integration of climate management principles into the architectural and planning structure of urban greening.

During the field trip, participants explored Ternopil’s entire system of green and natural spaces: the Ternopil Pond Embankment, Taras Shevchenko Park, Topilche Hydropark, and the Zagrebellya Regional Landscape Park.

These locations showcase various possibilities for the use and development of urban green spaces—from recreational areas to natural areas that are important for ecosystem conservation and the city’s adaptation to climate change.

The study visit to Ternopil marked the conclusion of a three-day exchange of experiences, during which participants visited Lutsk, Lviv, and Ternopil, learned about practical solutions, and discussed approaches to the future management of green spaces.
