#ParksMatters Good practice in greening Hamburg

2025.07.30

As part of the project “City Parks Matter - a new approach to urban greenery management in Ivano-Frankivsk and Rzeszów (ParksMatter)” we would like to introduce you to the good practice of the European city of Hamburg (Germany).

In the 20th century, cities developed as large industrial centers. However, today many old factories and warehouses are no longer in use, leaving behind polluted, neglected areas. Hamburg has found a solution to give them a second life.

Wilhelmsburg Park is one of the best examples of how old industrial areas can be transformed into green oases. Once a territory of port warehouses and factories, it is now a modern park with large lawns, natural ponds, and eco-friendly routes for walking and cycling.

Among the main principles of Hamburg's “green” development are:
- Creating green areas on the site of former industrial zones
- Adapting the city to climate change through green spaces

Such approaches can be useful for many cities where there are large areas of unused or industrial land that can be greened.

The project “City Parks Matter - a new approach to urban greenery management in Ivano-Frankivsk and Rzeszów” is implemented under the Interreg Next Poland-Ukraine 2021-2027 Programme.
