#ParksMatter Tiny forests: a major green revolution in the city

2025.11.26

As part of the project "City Parks Matter - a new approach to urban greenery management in Ivano-Frankivsk and Rzeszów (ParksMatter)", we would like to introduce you to one more good practice from the European city of Paris (France).

Modern cities face the problem of a lack of green spaces. Due to high building density and limited space, it is difficult to create new parks, and small lawns and flower beds do not have the desired effect. Paris has found a solution to this problem – “tiny forests,” which quickly transform even the smallest urban areas into real green oases.

This project uses a method developed by Japanese botanist Akira Miiawaki: local trees and shrubs are planted in dense rows, which accelerates their growth. The trees grow 3-10 times faster thanks to the high density of plantings and the natural interaction between plants. After 3 years, the tiny forests become completely self-sufficient, meaning it does not require additional care, and after 20 years, it looks as if it has been there for centuries. Tiny forests cool the urban environment, filter the air, and absorb rainwater, which helps combat climate change.
In Ivano-Frankivsk, tiny forests can be planted in areas between buildings, in schoolyards, near hospitals, and office buildings. They improve air quality, reduce noise levels, and provide shelter for birds and insects. Thanks to their dense planting, they do not take up much space but create a powerful green space effect.

The project “City Parks Matter - a new approach to urban greenery management in Ivano-Frankivsk and Rzeszów” is implemented under the Interreg Next Poland-Ukraine 2021-2027 Programme.
