#Part4CM As part of the RO-UA Partnership for Climate Change Mitigation project, we are promoting green energy and the use of renewable energy sources to reduce the harmful impact on the environment.

2022.01.05

Ukraine is developing the use of renewable energy sources, including electricity generation using wind and solar energy. As of 2021, the largest installed capacity of wind power plants was recorded in Zaporizhzhia region, and biomass and biogas power plants - in Khmelnytskyi region. Zaporizhzhia region was recognized as the leader in wind generation. As of today, wind power plants with a total capacity of 595.8 MW have been installed here, which is more than a third of all wind power in the country. It should be noted that solar power plants account for the largest share of RES generation in Ukraine, and they are also quite common in Zaporizhzhia.

However, in terms of total RES, the region is inferior to its neighbors Kherson, Mykolaiv, and Dnipro regions. Dnipropetrovska oblast is the absolute leader in RES generation with an installed capacity of over 1160 MW. Meanwhile, Khmelnytskyi region, with rather modest indicators of total RES generation, has taken the lead in terms of the capacity of biomass and biogas power plants. Its figure of 36.4 MW is not huge at all. However, given the considerable potential of bioenergy in Ukraine, it can be considered a certain claim to success. In general, the promotion and development of renewable energy sources is important because their use allows not only to save financial resources but also to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The RO-UA Partnership for Climate Change Mitigation project is funded by the European Union through the European Neighborhood Instrument and co-financed by the countries participating in the ENI CBC Romania-Ukraine 2014-2020 Program.
