#SmartTour Bremerhaven: a smart destination for the future

2025.09.29

As part of the Smart Tourism - Smart Destinations: Accessibility, Sustainability, Digitalisation, Cultural Heritage & Creativity” project, implemented under the Interreg Europe programme, we are presenting an example of good practice in sustainable tourism management - the Bremerhaven model in Germany.

This destination has developed an integrated tourism development strategy that combines an urban sustainability strategy and a tourism strategy for 2030, aimed at increasing sustainability, accessibility, and innovation. The basis is a co-management model that brings together government, business, scientific institutions, public organizations, and residents in a culture of “shared responsibility.” Scientific cooperation through the Pier of Science network and educational formats that combine tourism and science play an important role, shaping Bremerhaven's unique image as a “City of Science and Conferences.”

Modern digital solutions allow tracking tourist flows, assessing sustainability and social impact indicators, and ensuring transparency through open dashboards for stakeholders. Active participation in European competitions, such as EU Smart Tourism Capitals and Green Destinations Top 100, helps the city improve its approaches and increase its attractiveness internationally.

Bremerhaven demonstrates how partnership, innovation, and systematic management can create smart and sustainable tourist destinations that harmoniously combine economic development, environmental protection, and active community participation. This example confirms that the future of tourism belongs to open and sustainable destinations.
