#SmartTour Pafos - European Capital of Smart Tourism 2023
As part of the “Smart Tourism - Smart Destinations: Accessibility, Sustainability, Digitalisation, Cultural Heritage & Creativity” project, implemented under the Interreg Europe programme, we are introducing good practices in the development of tourist destinations. One of the most remarkable examples is the city of Pafos (Cyprus), which was named the European Capital of Smart Tourism in 2023.
This victory was made possible by comprehensive solutions in all key areas of smart tourism: accessibility, sustainability, digitalisation, cultural heritage and creativity. Throughout the year, the city implemented a number of projects and measures that changed the tourist profile of the destination. These include smart water management, the introduction of electric buses and bicycle routes, and the development of ‘smart’ infrastructure with LED lighting, Wi-Fi and environmental monitoring systems.
Pafos actively promotes digital solutions: from artificial intelligence-based campaigns to AR applications that bring the myths and history of Aphrodite to life in augmented reality. Significant attention is also paid to accessibility - the city has created routes for people with disabilities, introduced tactile paving, Braille signage and special transport.
At the same time, Pafos remains true to its heritage: UNESCO sites are protected here, cultural routes such as "The Ways of St. Paul" are being developed, and international festivals and creative workshops are organised. It is this combination of innovation and tradition that has made the city an example for other European destinations.
Today, Pafos is among the world's TOP 100 Green Destinations and has been recognised with awards for the quality of its coastline and sustainable practices. This confirms that smart tourism can change not only the image of a destination but also the quality of life of its residents, support local businesses and inspire communities.
The experience of Pafos, represented by Smart Tour's partner, the Pafos Regional Tourism Board, is the basis for shaping approaches in our project and an important benchmark for creating truly smart destinations.
