#SmartTour Sustainable Rural Mobility Plan of Lake Balaton: An Integrated Model for Smart Tourism Regions

As part of exploring the best European practices in sustainable tourism development within the "Smart Tourism – Smart Destinations: Accessibility, Sustainability, Digitalisation, Cultural Heritage and Creativity (Smart Tour)" project, implemented under the Interreg Europe programme and co-financed by the European Union, we continue to explore solutions that help tourism regions combine tourism development with environmental responsibility and modern mobility.

One of these best practices is the Sustainable Rural Mobility Plan of Lake Balaton – an integrated mobility plan that considers transport as an important element of developing a smart tourism region.

Lake Balaton is one of Hungary's most popular tourist regions. High visitor numbers create additional pressure on the transport system, particularly during peak tourist seasons. For this reason, developing alternatives to private cars is an important part of creating more comfortable and sustainable tourism.

The plan promotes an integrated approach to mobility by connecting different transport modes and taking into account the needs of both local residents and visitors. Public transport, rail services, cycling infrastructure, and other sustainable mobility options play an important role in this approach.

A key objective of the practice is to make tourist areas more accessible without relying on private cars. Better connections between different transport modes allow visitors to plan their journeys more easily, explore a wider range of destinations, and reduce the environmental impact of transport.

This approach contributes not only to reducing traffic pressure and emissions, but also to supporting the local economy, improving the quality of life for residents, and creating a more positive visitor experience.
