#SmartTour The Balaton Region: The Path to Sustainable and Innovative Tourism
As part of the Smart Tourism - Smart Destinations: Accessibility, Sustainability, Digitalization, Cultural Heritage, and Creativity (Smart Tour) project, implemented under the Interreg Europe program, we are exploring the good European practices in sustainable tourism development. One inspiring example is the Lake Balaton region in Hungary.
This region is one of the country's most valuable natural treasures, with a rich cultural heritage, picturesque landscapes, and a vibrant tourist life. Lake Balaton is the largest freshwater lake in Central Europe, surrounded by 180 settlements and known for its unique combination of natural and cultural values.
An important achievement is the implementation of a joint tourism management model that brings together local communities, businesses, non-governmental organizations, and regional institutions. The creation of the Destination Management Organisation (DMO) has made it possible to plan the region's development in a coordinated manner, coordinate the efforts of various stakeholders, support businesses and promote the joint Balaton tourism brand.
To make tourism more sustainable and year-round, the region has launched the Balaton365 program, which develops offers for tourists not only in summer but throughout the year. Another important area is the promotion of cultural heritage and its integration into tourism offerings. As part of the World Heritage Tourism project, the region is actively working to include the Balaton cultural landscape in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Thanks to its strategic approach, sustainable management, and focus on innovation, the Lake Balaton region demonstrates how smart tourist destinations can combine environmental protection, economic development, and cultural heritage preservation.
