#SmartTour “In Brittany without my car”, how to develop sustainable and smart mobility in tourism

As part of exploring the best European practices in sustainable tourism development within the "Smart Tourism – Smart Destinations: Accessibility, Sustainability, Digitalisation, Cultural Heritage and Creativity (Smart Tour)" project, implemented under the Interreg Europe programme, we continue to highlight successful initiatives that promote environmentally responsible tourism and smart mobility solutions.

One of these inspiring examples is "In Brittany Without My Car", an initiative implemented in the Brittany region of France. Its main objective is to make tourism more sustainable by encouraging visitors to leave their private cars behind and travel using public transport, bicycles, and other environmentally friendly mobility options.

The initiative brings together tourism operators, transport providers, public authorities, and local businesses to create a convenient and integrated mobility system for visitors. Tourists are offered ready-made itineraries combining trains, buses, cycling routes, walking trails, and other transport options, making it easy to explore the region without relying on a private car.

An important feature of the initiative is the use of digital information services, which help travellers plan their journeys, identify the best transport connections, access real-time travel information, and discover new attractions throughout the region.

This approach has helped reduce traffic congestion, lower greenhouse gas emissions, improve access to tourist destinations, and provide visitors with a more comfortable and sustainable travel experience. At the same time, it supports local businesses, strengthens the regional economy, and promotes sustainable travel habits.
