#SWEM Emergency Preparedness: Training for Students

2026.05.01

On May 29–30, lectures were held in Ivano-Frankivsk for students on the topic “Public Response to Natural and Technogenic Emergencies,” organized as part of the “Sustainable Weather Emergency Management (SWEM)”, implemented with the support of the European Union under the Interreg NEXT Romania-Ukraine 2021-2027 programme.

The event started with welcome remarks and a presentation on the SWEM project, delivered by Lidiia Cherevko, Head of Project Implementation Office.

During the training, participants learned about different types of hazards — both natural (heavy rainfall, floods, storms) and man-made (fires, accidents, and other emergencies). A key focus was placed on how to act properly in emergency situations, including assessing risks, staying calm, making quick decisions, and providing assistance to others when needed.

The speaker also emphasized the importance of information security and the risks of recruitment and manipulation, explaining how to recognize suspicious contacts or situations, protect personal data, and avoid potential threats in the digital and real world.

A separate part of the session was dedicated to hands-on practice: participants had the opportunity to try extinguishing a fire themselves using a fire extinguisher, which helped them reinforce what they had learned and gain confidence in their actions.

Such events are important for fostering a culture of safety, as they not only provide theoretical knowledge but also develop the practical skills needed in real life.
