#SWEM Urban weather monitoring system – digital solutions

2026.03.24

As part of the “Sustainable Weather Emergency Management (SWEM)” project, under the Interreg NEXT Romania–Ukraine 2021–2027 programme, we aim to demonstrate how modern technologies help cities respond more effectively to weather-related challenges and improve the safety of residents. A weather monitoring system is no longer just a forecast on your phone, but a suite of digital tools that enable a rapid, accurate and effective response to changes.

Modern cities are increasingly installing networks of weather stations that operate in real time. These record temperature, precipitation levels, wind speed and direction, humidity and other parameters that are critical during natural disasters. This data is sent to servers, where specialised algorithms analyse it and help identify dangerous situations – from icy roads to sudden storms.

Digital solutions enable not only monitoring but also rapid response. When the system detects critical changes, city services receive instant alerts and can quickly deploy equipment, close off specific areas or warn residents of potential danger. This significantly enhances the city’s response to unexpected weather events. A weather monitoring system makes the city more predictable and resilient. The more accurate the information, the more effective the preparation for natural disasters and the safer the urban environment becomes for everyone.
