#SWEM How have weather records changed over the last decades?

As part of the information and communication campaign of the “Sustainable Weather Emergency Management (SWEM)” project, under the Interreg NEXT Romania–Ukraine 2021–2027 programme, we are looking at how weather patterns are changing and what this means for community safety.

Over the last decades, meteorological observations have increasingly recorded new temperature records and extreme weather events. Periods of unusually high temperatures are becoming longer, while heavy rainfall over short periods can increase the risk of local flooding. At the same time, the patterns of other hazardous weather events are changing, from droughts and thunderstorms to strong winds and hail.

Weather records are not just numbers in meteorological reports. They help us better understand the risks communities may face and highlight the importance of being prepared for emergencies in advance.

That is why weather monitoring, timely warnings, information sharing and coordination between services are important elements of modern safety systems.

Within the SWEM project, partners are working to strengthen communities’ preparedness for weather-related emergencies and develop practical approaches to responding to these challenges.
